Veishea 2004: The Last Veishea?

Apparently, there were riots during Veishea this weekend. How wonderful is that? Now the question has to come up, is it worth holding Veishea at all anymore? Personally, I would love to see Veishea continue. However, should the decision to discontinue the tradition be made, all I would have to say is that the decision was fairly made.

Veishea is the largest student-run organization/activity-thing in the nation.

People complain that Veishea is dry, though it didn’t used to be. It’s not as if it’s impossible to obtain alcohol, regardless. Furthermore, Veishea has been dry for six years. How many students really remember a time when Veishea wasn’t dry that they were even old enough to get alcohol? It’s a scapegoat for causing problems.

Beth said that people tried to get into her locked apartment during the riots. I guess they did some damage to the door in the process. She said that she called the police, and that after someone was dispatched she stayed on the phone with the dispatcher until the officers arrived, because it was that scary. She was alone, too. What if someone had broken into the apartment in the uproar of a riot? Regardless of the fact that she was way off of the grounds of Veishea activities, that doesn’t mean that crazies won’t roam the city and terrorize people. She said that she had never been so scared in her life. Absolutely rediculous.

The riots made the CNN website in an Associated Press article.

I’ll be interested to hear what happens, and I’ll have to go check out some of the damage on the way home tonight.

Definately not cool.

  1. Beth Says:

Actually, the neighbor’s and their drunken friends attempted their breaking an entering on Friday night/Sat morn. Di was there, but she was totally asleep. The riots were Sat night/Sun morn. But I was alone on that night of the riot and I was afraid that they would try it again. It was a scary night.
